Design normal weight shuttering blocks masonry

In July 2012, an amendment to the DTU 20.1 (French standards for execution of Masonry) was published to consider normal weight concrete shuttering blocks as a sanctioned building solution into a defined scope (basement walls, buried or not; walls). Execution and design rules have been added.

The amendment is limited to the resistance to vertical loading according to the allowable stress design approach (approach already used for masonry in DTU 20.1). The resistance to horizontal loading is not dealt within the amendment. This study aims at determining the calculation method for the justification according Eurocodes of a wall built up with normal weight concrete shuttering blocks and subjected to vertical and horizontal loading.

A correspondence between the design to vertical loading according to the DTU 20.1 and the method presented in this study, as well as two worked examples of the design of a wall subjected to vertical and horizontal loading are presented in Design normal weight shuttering blocks masonryappendices.
